Why Toronto leads from Chicago

Chicago’s largest employers are mostly government, hospitals, and school systems, but the traffic we see toward Canada comes from a different corner of the economy: headquarters.

BMO’s US headquarters sits in the West Loop, and Chicago is the bank’s largest US market, with roughly 190 branches across the metro area. That means a steady flow of staff moving between Toronto and Chicago.

Canadian National Railway adds to it: CN’s US headquarters and a US training center are in Homewood, on the south side of the metro area, so rail staff and managers also move between CN’s Canadian and Chicago-area operations.

Chicago is also headquarters to major employers like AbbVie, McDonald’s, United Airlines, JPMorganChase, Northern Trust, Accenture, and PwC.

Some of their roles, such as accountants, engineers, and management consultants, are professions the TN visa covers for Canadians. Some of these moves are round trips. Others are one-way, when a Chicago job ends, and someone heads north for good.

Chicago wraps around the bottom of Lake Michigan, so eastbound loads run through Indiana and Michigan before reaching Ontario. Everything farther west has to cross the northern Plains.

How a Chicago shipment works

Windsor is under five hours away, so some people do drive their own car to Ontario. Most of our Chicago customers ship anyway, because the drive is one leg of a larger move, and because a border crossing on moving day is one more thing to schedule.

Who Ships from San Chicago to Canada?

Canadians on corporate transfers

Staff moving between a Canadian head office and a Chicago-area office, such as BMO in the West Loop or CN Railway in Homewood, whether under a TN visa or an intracompany transfer. Because Canada is where they started, this traffic often runs both ways: south when the posting begins, north again when it ends.

Other-nationality hires heading to Canada

Chicago’s hospital systems, universities, and corporate headquarters, including University of Chicago Medicine, Advocate Health, AbbVie, McDonald’s, United Airlines, and JPMorganChase, draw talent on H-1B and F-1 status. When that status ends, some move to Canada, often to be near family. Since Canada wasn’t their starting point, these are one-way shipments.

Owners who can’t return in person

A visa change, a legal or travel restriction, or another situation may keep an owner from handing over the vehicle themselves. We coordinate with a designated contact at pickup and handle the export paperwork for them.

Some people do drive it. But if you’re moving for a job, you’re usually also handling a lease, a truck, and a start date, and a full day behind the wheel plus a border crossing can be the piece that’s easiest to hand off. Shipping is also the practical choice if you’re flying north and don’t want to return for the car.

Yes. Give us the start date when you request a quote and we’ll plan pickup and delivery around it. If the transfer is temporary, we can also set up the return shipment north in advance.

Usually, yes, but downtown access takes planning. Car carriers are large, so we’ll need to know the garage’s height clearance and whether there’s a legal loading spot nearby. We can often arrange to meet the driver at a nearby street or lot instead.

It can. Lake-effect snow along the Michigan and Ontario corridors sometimes slows carriers between November and March. We build extra time into winter routing and will tell you if it affects your dates.

We pick up across Chicagoland, including Evanston, Oak Park, Naperville, Schaumburg, Oak Brook, and Arlington Heights, plus northwest Indiana. You don’t need to bring the vehicle to a terminal.

We recommend booking one to two weeks ahead for the Ontario routes, and earlier for longer hauls or a fixed start date

I recently used US Canada Auto Transport to ship my car from Orlando, FL, USA to Ontario, Canada. Overall experience was good & car was delivered safely to warehouse with no damage. One thing I need to appreciate was that all the required paperwork & documentation were handled by them which made process easy. Remaining was to fill Form 1 & visit warehouse to collect the car.Pricing was competitive & affordable when compared to other companies for this cross-border car shipping.Only downside was communication regarding delivery date. Driver did not contact before the delivery for car to warehouse. instead, I received a call around Friday noon for car pickup. This created urgency because if I had been unable to collect my car on Friday, I would have been responsible to warehouse storage fees from Friday to Monday which were CAD 220 per day.Despite the communication issue, I am happy, as my car arrived safely, documentation was smooth & price was great. I would definitely recommend US Canada auto transport for their overall service. I would suggest they improve advance notification & coordination before vehicle delivery to warehouse.

I actually had a great experience with US Canada Auto Transport. After the initial inquiry, I had a designated contact, Chinoso, who took care to make sure I had all my paperwork in order for the transport, and handled the logistics. Communication was good, the vehicle was picked up in a timely fashion, and got delivered to my door, undamaged and safely, for the agreed upon amount, without a hiccup.One thing I did do was enlist the help of a Customs Broker, Border Buddy, which was totally worth it. They handled the paperwork to export the vehicle from the US, and import it in Canada, and paid the duties on my behalf. Not having to physically go to the border or deal with importation personally was a huge value. Border Buddy and US Canada Auto Transport worked well together and made it very easy for me.If I ever import a vehicle again, I'll use both services as I was perfectly happy with both.Many thanks to all involved! I recently used US Canada Auto Transport to relocate my US vehicle from Quebec Canada to California. The process was absolutely seamless. This company knows their business. I literally did nothing but sign the contract. They handled customs - no issues there, not one. The delivery driver gave us plenty of notice ahead of the pick up and delivery. It took about 2 weeks. The vehicle was in great shape. As for Julia, my contact person, be advised that she may come across as “no nonsense” but it’s because she knows her stuff. Trust her. The transport fee was the lowest price out of 5 companies I contacted. I highly recommend this company!
